Space Weather in Route

You also might enjoy the alerts and news from spaceweather.com

As an example today I received an alert:

A CME IS HEADING FOR EARTH: Yesterday, a magnetic filament on the sun erupted, hurling a CME almost directly toward Earth. Forecast models say it should arrive during the late hours of Jan. 22nd, sparking minor (G1) to moderate (G2) geomagnetic storms with auroras in northern Europe and northern-tier US states. Follow this story @ Spaceweather.com.

Above: A NASA forecast model of the CME shows it striking Earth during the late hours of Jan. 22nd.

Later they sent this advisory:

Official Space Weather Advisory issued by NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center
Boulder, Colorado, USA

SPACE WEATHER ADVISORY OUTLOOK #24-4
2024 January 21 at 10:17 p.m. MST (2024 January 22 0517 UTC)

**** SPACE WEATHER OUTLOOK ****

Summary For January 15-21

No significant space weather activity occurred.

Outlook For January 22-28

There is an increased chance for R1-R2 (Minor-Moderate) radio blackouts due to the flare potential of Region 3559.

G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) geomagnetic storming is likely on 22-23 Jan due to effects from CMEs that left the Sun on 20 Jan.

Data used to provide space weather services are contributed by NOAA,
USAF, NASA, NSF, USGS, the International Space Environment Services
and other observatories, universities, and institutions. More
information is available at SWPC’s Web site http://swpc.noaa.gov

All interesting information, especially as it will affect radio communications.

Interesting but the reality is – did it really happen the Bands did not seem to notice?

I also expected to shut my HF stations down for a week but what I saw was a ‘NO AFFECT’ the FT8 Bands just kept chugging away. All those HAM Alerts for a sputter – but hey, they got to keep up the 24/7 news cycles, who ya voting for?!?

I’ve worked TX5S, 2576mi, FT8-Hound four times on three bands (20/17/12m) and added five more DXCC countries to include Eswatini, 8683mi, & Reunion Isl, 9741mi. FYI, WSJT logging does not always trip the LOG, on ‘Hound’ QSO’s.

If you review the affected area maps, we both were well outside of the “strike zone.”

Also remember forecasts are probabilities rather than assured events.

The forecast was also fairly tepid and never a “bell ringer” prediction.
