Non-Radio – Restaurant Noise and Pain

Recently I was invited to a vendor hosted fancy dinner, top shelf steakhouse sort of place in Las Vegas.

The noise was painful (I’m not calling half of the stuff played “music” on its lack of artistic merit) enough that an otherwise exceptional meal was a “chore.”

I am writing three days later, and my head & ears still hurt.

Perhaps it isn’t every person who has the NIOSH dB application on their phone, but I have used it for years. Technically the app can be correlated but not calibrated.

Average at chest level was 95dB with peaks at 118-119dB.

The average was equal to a circular saw running constant and is considered to have a 15 minute max exposure before pain sets in.

The peak is like a plane taking off or a jackhammer next to you, and the pre-pain exposure level is considered to be 1 minute. The peaks occurred on the beats, so were present circa 100-140 times per minute.

As mentioned the place has a great reputation, and truly the food was outstanding albeit outrageously expensive.

Even though the payment was not directly ours (the vendor treated, which means they will overcharge us along the way to recover the costs) the chances of my making a return visit are zero.

Las Vegas is a crazy place to start out with, but what were these people thinking?
