A new MixW Version for the Holidays

Noticed that Nick UT2UZ and Denis UU9JDR have released a new major version of MixW

I’ll be looking over the new version in the next few weeks.

From the MixW Website:

MixW3 is a next step on the way to the upcoming multiplatform MixW project
There is a lot of work to do, but now we’d like to present a prototype of future MixW4, a very simple DigiPan32 project (see below).
MixW3 proposes new Telnet dialog with talk over DxCluster support and a possibility to have a backup copies of your log on our server, dx.mixw.net. Logs can be password protected.
MixW3 upgrade is free for those who stay with us 10 years or more. MixW3 is free for beta team, HAM radio developers and DxPeditions.

News is that MixW 3.x calls home – that it actively contacts the MixW servers to verify if the instance running is a licensed copy.

Whether this is a one-time check or happens every time the program is started is something to explore.

If it is an every time thing MixW 3.x does, well I am not certain how you could use MixW 3.x, period.

More when I get a chance to play with the new program.

Been a MixW owner for many years, not impressed… I’m also the new owner of the very open Yahoo RealMixW Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RealmixW/. The alternate to Yahoo MixW Group that is run by a censoring myopic dictator, G3VFP. Only G3’s opinion and no MixW negatives allowed.

The program is OK, but the big negative is it does everything but train users how to recognize what mode is being seen/heard or do any auto recognition as to what mode is being observed – difficult and confusing program, due to doing everything but helping the unskilled!

I still find the old Digipan the best for PSK as it is far easier/simpler to use! SSTV check out MMSSTV or W95SSTV – the KISS methods.

Oh ya, MixW cost me $50 in 2006, and took two months to get the registration code.

I’ve yet to get my value from this program. But I’ve not looked at this latest release, so I hope they have addressed the numerous shortcomings. And quit assuming all users are experts.
