Dayton Hamvention 2008 Follow-Up Report No. 16 – Handsfree by Bluetooth

Displaying at the Dayton Hamvention was TalkSafe, a UK product push from their  very strict handsfree laws to make any rig connect to a headset/earpiece by Bluetooth.

Talksafe Ranger Unit

They were showing both waterproof and non-waterproof models for everything from Motorcycle use to inside vehicle use.

Worth noting is on some models the unit’s cover is the antenna, making mounting orientation important.

I’m looking into this closer as an option for use on my K-100LT

  1. I looked at their website but didn’t find a lot of information about it. It looks like you need to use the call answer/hangup button on your headset as PTT, is that correct? If so, it seems that it’d be a little difficult to hold that down. On the other hand, my car has built-in bluetooth, and the “PTT” in this case would be a button on the center console, which actually wouldn’t be too bad.

I saw that they had a few US dealers listed, have you contacted any of them regarding pricing?

At Dayton they were showing a couple units with various features.

I’m hoping they have all the products listed soon.

Have just started looking into this technology. The PTT issue is common across most of the solutions.

Some use VOX and others use a remote PTT switch. More as I continue to look into the technology.

    Hi

Thanks for the interest in our products.

In answer to the question from David regarding the PTT for TalkSafe, you DO use the call answer/hang up button on the headset but it is a latched system, so a single press and release of the button takes you into transmit mode and you don’t have to touch it again until you have finished talking and then a single press puts you into receive mode.

Pairing with in-car systems is not that easy and we have found that only certain vehicles pair without problems. However, it is something that we are working on and hope to have a solution in the very near future.

Regarding Steve’s comments, whilst TalkSafe does not have VOX, there is a way that it can be done if you have VOX on your transceiver. In addition, TalkSafe can have an external PTT switch fitted if required.

If you have any questions regarding the functionality of TalkSafe, please feel free to contact us at RPF for further information.
