Dayton Hamvention 2008 Follow-Up Report No. 12 – Antenna Forum

The 2008 Dayton Hamvention Antenna Forum, Moderated by Tim Duffy, was held Friday May 16th.

Presentations included:

Real World Antenna Patterns vs. Theoretical Computer Antenna Plots
by Mike Wetzel, W9RE and Tom Chance, K9XV

A New Approach for Measuring Complex Antenna Currents in a Vertical Array
by Greg Ordy, W8WWV

Multi-element Lowband Vertical Arrays – Approaches for Small Lots
by Ted Rappaport, N9NB and Ray Sokola, K9RS

It seemed that 4-square antennas were mentioned a lot.

You can find the forum and previous years forum slide on Tim K3LR’s website.

I found the presentations informative, educational and quite interesting!

  1. Scot, K9JY says:

I’ve worked on 4-square antennas and operated with them as well. They really rock.

Having a good, interconnected system of radials and precise measurements on the antennas themselves are critical to the performance.

But, once set up, the verticals are quiet (because of all the radials and ground) and wonderfully directive.

Caution: think how big of an area you need for them; it’s a lot.

If you can’t do this for 80/160, try a 40-meter 4-square. You’ll be very pleased with the performance.
