Great question Don

This is where the Thin-Pipe model beats the Thick-Pipe model.

With the SmartSDR Flex-6000 series whether you show 192 khz or 14 Mhz the bandwidth inthe pipe is the same.

How is this going to play out as we move from having 96-192khz bandwidth SDR signals to process/view/use to having those multi-mhz or even full-spectrum signal SDR bandwidth systems?

Is that where it all breaks down? The fact that its almost impossible to stream multi-mhz wide signals between the SDR device and the PC?

Several bloggers have gotten spec sheets and hopefully pricing.

40M + 20M I heard. Did not hear the price and it is not on price lists TenTec handed out.

There is a new Model 278 Auto Tuner as well.

Much of service now deferred, at least for a weekend or two.

Was able to get the feed lines free, but found that my W9INN 20/40/75/80/160m Half-Sloper was needing repairs, and operator error on my part did a bit more damage.

Need to build new spreaders and then repair the feed point.

Also found some of the waterproofing on the rotor control cable was wide open. Again things to fix when the tower is next lowered and tilted.

Planning... planning.....

Hi Ted K5TED

Good point - your Quad Core gaming level machine is holding up well, where my pedestrian Core Duo weak-kneed obsolete machine is being killed by SDR duties.

As an update I am finding that at the point of major issue a non-user initiated Task is showing up as a resource hog. Doing so debugging to capture exactly what it is, but it looks like some version of Dell's self-diagnostic package.

More as I debug the old machine.

And I will keep your experience in mind if I upgrade.

Thanks!

There are news reports that the cell system was down, but all of the carriers say those reports are false.

As for cops being radio silent, they definitely were not; I was listening to one of the streaming scanners. There's no way they could coordinate a response like that without radio comms. Using a police freq as a trigger would be insanely stupid, assuming the bomber didn't want to blow himself up.

Hi Walter K6WRU

Let's see what settles out - there are several sources stating that the cell net was downed for security.

You're correct that this was an RF rich environment.

Several sources say it was woking if you made a call from a cell phone outbound, but calls inbound to the area for cell phones were blocked until the area was secured.

There are a few sources that devices such as these - http://www.bombjammer.com - were employed.

We'll unlikely be given details if they were. Makes good security sense to not fill in these sorts of details.

It would seem reasonable to expect standard countermeasures to make such gear available.

In the videos it was clear if anyone was doing an environmental assessment, as another way IEDs have tiered hazards causing additional collateral damage is contamination.

One set of reports that is concerning is the talk that video analysis quickly showed suspicious activity from a apparently single criminal placing several backpacks in garbage cans.

Were the camera feeds unwatched?

A third incident at the library looks related in time, but appears to have been a fire bomb.

It is also worth mentioning that a Risk/Return analysis of RF prior to clearing the area of additional hazards might weigh heavily on making the contact even with the RF concern.

It has been reported the Volunteer Hams were evacuated from the scene.

Earthquakes cause a similar synchronous demand on telephone networks. Even landlines are severely overloaded for hours after a disaster like that.

So telephone outages are completely normal and don't need explanations involving the authorities. The populace is quite capable of taking out the network with simple demand.

RF triggered devices might be a hazard, but there was continuous use of HTs on multiple frequencies for hours and hours at the finish line before the explosions. Just look at the video -- everyone has a radio.

hi,

Steve, My computer plans for my Flex-6700 are as follows.
MacMini (i5 - 16GB ram, 320GB drive, 2011 model) running Windows7 x64 (perhaps bootcamped). I want maximum hardware and minimum software between me and my Flex-6700.

I run VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro and see additional latencies I would like to eliminate.

It will be "Sweet", when SmartSDR has true OS-X version available.

Anyway, my dreams!

73's and keep up the great "Ponderings".

I chose to have a shack Windows 7 machine that does everything I might need, including PowerSDR, logging, digital modes, etc. It is a big case with a very high quality 850W power supply (high efficiency, low EMI), an Intel i3 CPU, 8GB RAM, 60GB SSD + 4x HDD's, 2 soundcards, 2 full-HD monitors, TV tuner, remote control, network shared printer/scanner. I also have a thin 13" MSI Windows 7 laptop, that i use whenever i am away for surfing, email and some light antenna modelling or PCB design; I remote access the shack computer from the laptop via Teamviewer to work digital modes, and i use Dropbox to syncronise some files between the two.

I would to the same if I were you, a bigger machine for the shack, complemented with a laptop, make it a Macbook so you can run all your Apple software. Get read of the old stuff and get a new setup, it doesn't have to be top notch but the latest Intel CPU's really offer a big improvement in the performance/watt department and the integrated graphics is decent; I actually sold an older premium model quadcore CPU and got the latest i3 just for lowering the overall power consumption and heat (the PC is on 24/7), and the performance drop was barely noticeable, system is still responding instantly.

Steve the new rig looks great and you are so right checking out the videos sure does spur one on!!
There have been many other HAM sites in the past ten years but they just did not get the publicity to get HAMs to follow.

eHAM allows/enjoys TROLLs/LIDs (that do not get personal). The controversy trolls bring increase site hits that increases ad pricing. eHAM does not care about fairness or truth they are in it for the money. eHAM is about selling ads, which in part they need to keep eHAM free. But I'm confident eHAM is far exceeding the break-even hit count going into profit making. And eHAM makes even more money in subscriptions for ad-free memberships and first to view new classifieds.

Last year I posted SEVEN main line articles - all I got was grief from trolls for my efforts (well not totally true, there were a few thank you's) but far to few for the grief/frustrations from arm-chair-trolls. eHAM doesn't even 'give' an ad-free membership per posted main line article for the hours of effort. I now post on HamUniverse.com for all to read and enjoy; HU is an article posting download site not a blog.

There is much ado about stolen valor these days and feel it is a serious issue, because I have witnessed some whom claim to be Veterans on the streets in New York State, yet their behavior is quite contrary (i.e. Trying to assault a pregnant woman expressing her freedom of speech on "their street corner “).

I think there is room for a solid amateur radio forum. Other than the examples listed. There are a couple other Sites such as 73s which is more of ham/twitter combo and of course the ARRL which had not incorporated much if any of the social networking aspect of online hams. Also it can be difficult to locate local ham groups and hams on sites such as Facebook. As far as funding goes I say whatever works. I do agree with the other comments made about the infamous trolls.

“Twinkle, twinkle, little Sputnik,,
You iss Rawshin dirty tricknik.
Up above da vorld so high,

Boy I do think and hope there could be a new forum to replace eham. The decline of eham is really a shame.

It actually was the first ham web site I found and really got me interested in the hobby prompting me to join a club and get licensed. I was a paid subscriber for some time too.

Their reviews on there are always referred to on manufacture websites. But even the reviews have gone down hill.

I really used to like and trust them, then a few weeks ago I was reading about the new Ten-Tec qrp rig and a guy had posted a nasty troll review that slammed the radio, and he even admitted in the review he got the information from the online manual for the radio.

In other words he never even owned it!

So, I wrote the moderator about the review and I never heard a thing back and the "review" is still posted.

The trolls on the many forums including the ones on the flex ( I have one, and love mine) are completely out of hand. Anyway, I don't know what can be done, they have been on-line for so long and have built up an audience. I would love to see a replacement for them, but am skeptical that a good one will get to that level of visibility on the internet. We can only hope.

Steve,
Thanks for your information feed on the Flex 6000 series. I have been following this from the beginning. I ordered a 6500 with options the very day they were announced. I am searching daily for information regarding the 6000 series and check your site very often. I await the delivery of the 6500 with great anticipation of it's abilities and features.

Again Thanks,
Joe

Hi Larry W2LJ

Perhaps we're seeing the same thing. I struggle too with the word "Legacy" as being meaningless.

Even the examples I give in the post about the four classes of Legacy are really the four ways the efforts we make while we're alive and kicking survive us. That remembrance is action by others in response to how we lived our lives, putting us in alignment again with the good point you bring up.

All best and 73

Does a legacy even matter?

Our lives all cause ripples. Even this Ham, without a major legacy as you see it, caused you to write this post. So in a way,his life even touched you.

This fellows Emcomm efforts may have directly saved lives and property - or maybe he trained someone who will someday save someone's life or property. We may never know; but that wouldn't diminish his impact.

To some people, fanfare and accolades are not what it's all about. Some people really need the limelight, while others are quite content to be in the trenches, slogging it out, getting the job done; and attention is the last thing they need or want.

In the end, legacies don't really amount to a hill of beans. It's what you do with the time you have is what really matters. How treat your fellow man HERE. What you do with your time and talents while you're alive - that's what matters.
