With Varying Frequency - Amateur Radio Ponderings

I’ve had the question put to me “How do your ‘A Good Read’ and ‘Life Tool Series’ posts relate to Amateur Radio?”

In the words of  Arthur Conan Doyle - the British author who created Sherlock Holmes - (1859-1930):

“It is a great thing to start life with a small number of really good books which are your very own.”

These are wise words indeed.

“A Good Read” is the least connected to Amateur Radio, with the books reviewed being books of merit in that they are “special” in some form or another.  They are books that I found significantly rewarded my time to read them.

“Life Tool Series” is much more focused, being these are practical books that for their topic area are definitive, concise and given you enough operational information to self-actuate once you understand their contents.  This series really should be thought of as books that are “Toolboxes of Useful Powerful Ideas.”  It is the ideas that really are the “Life Tools.”

The relationship to Amateur Radio is profound.  You can’t run a DXpedition or even successfully fund your own QTH’s station without a functional understanding of Money and “How Money is Counted,” which has been the first two topics covered in the “Life Tool Series.” 

While these books are certainly not ones you would need to have on hand in your shack, or included in the field reference materials for a DXpedition, they do contain the fundamentals in their topic areas that you need to have mastered for success.

That they have application to most all aspects of life is their greatest bonus.

Hoping that you too learn, grow and enjoy “A Good Read” recommendations and find the “Life Tools Series” fundamental in your “Intellectual Life Toolbox.”

As mentioned in my end of 2007 post, I will be moving the content for “A Good Read” to Random Hold in order to reduce the “clutter” for radio amateurs subscribing by RSS who do not want to read about things other than ham radio.

This also the second book reviewed in my “Life Tools Series.” These are books every personal library should contain.
